LEGO Anniversary

Today is the official anniversary of the LEGO brick patent!

Ole Kirk Christiansen, Danish inventor of the LEGO, patented the toy on January 28, 1958. The interlocking plastic bricks have become a must-have toy for children all over the world. Celebrate the anniversary of the LEGO by building an amazing structure with your family and friends!

Happy birthday to Lewis Carroll, who was born on this day in 1832!

Today celebrates the 184th birthday of Lewis Carroll, author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Born Charles Dodgson, he is known for his use of word play and logic in his literature. He was also a photographer and had an interest in mathematics. He died of pneumonia in 1898.

This morning, in Denver, author Kwame Alexander spoke to booksellers from all across the country at the eleventh Winter Institute conference. With his say-yes attitude, Alexander spoke about diversity in children's literature and the power of booksellers to use their creativity to bring important books to kids of all backgrounds. Reading, he said, is an opportunity for everyone to experience growth.

2015 Children's Award Winners

Prestigious children's book awards for 2015 have been announced!

The awards for great children's books were announced at the ALA Midwinter conference on Monday, January 11th. These awards include the Newbery Medal and the Caldecott, the most prestigious awards for most distinguished contribution to children's literature and most distinguished picture book, respectively.
