Unlocking the Truth Visits Brilliant Books

A trio of tween rockers shows listeners of all ages that to be yourself is the truth

Malcolm Brickhouse, 13, on vocals and guitar, Alec Atkins, 13, on bass, and Jarad Dawkins, 12, on drums, are the Brooklyn-based metal trio Unlocking the Truth.

In Breaking a Monster, a documentary featured at this year's film festival, director Luke Meyer shares the astonishing story of the baby-faced Brooklyn metal band as they set out to prove they are more than a novelty act, advancing from viral video sensations to the youngest band to ever play at Coachella. Despite dealing with the high-stakes pressures of a million dollar record deal, and a music industry intent on taking control of their lives and music, these are just kids who want to play.

Unlocking the Truth will be at Brilliant Books Friday, July 31st at 3:00pm to meet fans and sign copies of their eponymous memoir, which shares their story, as well as the principles that have led to their success. These three talented kids making musical history should be on your radar! Learn more about the band and their book here.

You can find more information about the documentary Breaking a Monster, as well as information about TCFF and showtimes here. Visit the Unlocking the Truth website or follow them on Twitter.

Amy Shares Her Love for Mosquitoland and Brilliant Books Monthly

Amy, a longtime customer, new Brilliant Books Monthly subscriber, and blogger at MamaManagement, shared a blog post detailing her love for her first Briliant Books Monthly selection, Mosquitoland. We loved Amy's enthusiasm so much that we had to share her words!

I. Love. This. Book.

What makes this book even better is that I didn't pick it out for myself. I love that I, literally, found this book on my doorstep.

The folks at Brilliant Books read my mind.

You can read the rest of Amy's kind words and explore her blog, MamaManagement, here.

Go Set A Watchman - An Opinion Piece

To Fans of "To Kill A Mockingbird"

We at Brilliant Books want to be sure that our customers are aware that “Go Set A Watchman” is not a sequel or prequel to ‘To Kill A Mockingbird'. Neither is it a new book.  It is a first draft that was originally, and rightfully, rejected. The book, and some of the characters therein, are very much a product of this era in the South.

We suggest you view this work as an academic insight rather than as a nice summer novel. This situation is comparable to James Joyce's stunning work 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man', and his original draft 'Stephen Hero'. 'Hero' was initially rejected, and Joyce reworked it into the classic 'Portrait'. 'Hero' was eventually released as an academic piece for scholars and fans—not as a new 'Joyce novel'. We would have been delighted to see “Go Set A Watchman” receive a similar fate.

It is disappointing and frankly shameful to see our noble industry parade and celebrate this as “Harper Lee’s New Novel”.  This is pure exploitation of both literary fans and a beloved American classic (which we hope has not been irrevocably tainted.) We therefore encourage you to view “Go Set A Watchman” with intellectual curiosity and careful consideration; a rough beginning for a classic, but only that.

"Thank you for being the only store on the face of the earth where I outsell E.L. James." - Emily St. John Mandel

Station Eleven beats out Grey for #1 Spot (at Brilliant Books)

We send all the authors and publishers that appear on our weekly bestsellers lists.  This week, Emily St. John Mandel's Station Eleven topped the paperback bestsellers list, outselling some stiff competition! Mandel's response?  "Thank you for being the only store on the face of the earth where I outsell E.L. James."

We love Emily's work here at Brilliant Books, and think it's an astonishing achievment being #2, nationally, to the fastest selling paperack of all time.
