I am truly glad that I finally got around to reading this book. It is a beautifully written book that follows 3 women through their individual tragedies and their relationships with Lake Superior.

City of Bohane is a read that will be marked in part for it's use of language. I'm not sure how much of the slang used in the book is “real”, but for me, this was like reading A Clockwork Orange all over again. While at first this seems like a detriment, as one gets further into the book, it helps the reader truly get sucked into this other world. The plot centers around a cross between a family dynasty and a gang. The rivalries, gang wars, and romance are all placed in a grimy, not quite post apocalyptic, Ireland. Shifting alliances, secrets, and misinformation abound.

Ragnarok, by A. S. Byatt is the newest release in the Canongate Myths series. This is a tale of a young girl evacuated to the English countryside during WWII, and her use of the mythology as an escape and coping method. It is, primarily though, a retelling of the Norse myth of the end of the world. The purely mythological aspects of the tale are very well done. There is some fleshing out of bits of the myth, but it is doesn't feel inaccurate to the characters involved. The aspects of the tale dealing with the young girl were also well done. It involves her fear in a war torn country, and concern for her absent pilot father. She views the war through the lens of mythology in an attempt to understand it. Overall, this is a beautifully written adaptation of the myth.

Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? is Jeanette Winterson's long awaited (by me anyhow) memoir. For people who read Oranges are Not the Only Fruit, and wondered how autobiographical it may have been, some answers lie within. As stunningly written as her fictional works, this memoir takes a look back at her fervently religious childhood, and her struggles dealing with her adoption and her sexuality.

An amazing, and oft overlooked piece of early European literature. This collection has some of the classic sagas like Egil's Saga, The Saga of the People of Laxardal, and The Vinland Sagas, in addition to some less well known like The Saga of Gunnlaug Serpent-Tongue and the Tale of Thorstein Staff-Struck. It also features maps and historical information on ships, typical Icelandic farms, and an explanation of Icelandic social and political structure. Essential.

The Raven's Gift is a compelling exploration of Siberian indigenous religion and shamanism as viewed by a fellow who normally is a writer of academic textbooks. Witnessing the analytical mind of Jon Turk struggling to come to terms with what he experiences in the north made for a fantastic read!

This is a nicely balanced piece of travel writing from Frazier. There is a fairly thorough history of Siberia, both geographically and politically, as well as the tales of the adventures, frights, and occasional drudgery of the author's visits.

A Faroese classic, The Old Man and His Sons chronicles the clash of generational values on the islands many years ago. The new generation want "real" houses and store bought shoes, while the old generation is content with how things have been in the years long past. A glimpse at a time and place long since changed.
