Cartoonist Bob Mankoff Gets Very Semi-Serious

Light-hearted and sometimes poignant documentary has a great deal to say about funny business

In Leah Wolchok’s joyful documentary, Very Semi-Serious, we see the artists behind the often iconic single panel cartoons in "New Yorker" magazine. At the center of it all is Cartoon Editor Bob Mankoff, who drew what may be the greatest cartoon of the modern era. Mankoff allows any regular schmoe off the street to pitch their work, leading to hilarious and heartbreaking exchanges with the freaks, geeks, and merry pranksters who channel their offbeat worldviews into the magazine’s iconic black-and-white illustrations.

The documentary is featured at this year's Traverse City Film Festival and Mankoff will be participating in a Comedy Panel moderated by Michael Moore alongside Doug Benson and Geoff Tate. Following the panel, Mankoff will be signing copies of his book How about Never--Is Never Good for You?: My Life in Cartoons.

The Comedy Panel will be held at the City Opera House Saturday, August 1st at 9:30am. The signing will be directly after at 11am. Learn more about Mankoff and his book here.
