Pride Despite Prejudice

I'm having a lot of trouble coming up with something upbeat to write for Pride Month. It's been a tough year for all of us, and for a lot of people in the LGBTQ+ community things aren't getting better.  For example, more than 140 bills have been introduced in 33 states to restrict the rights of transgender people. There is proposed legislation in Texas that would make providing gender-affirming medical care to a child a felony, tantamount to child abuse. Religious organizations are fighting against allowing gay couples to foster children.

Beyond Dungeons & Dragons

Thursday, April 15th, 2021

It’s no secret that we here at Brilliant Books are a bunch of nerds. And one thing we love even more than our various nerdy pursuits is sharing our nerdiness with the world, and especially with you, our devoted customers. You may not know this about me, but in addition to my love of science and theatre, I’m also a big fan of tabletop role playing games. After all, who doesn’t want to pretend to be a wizard or a swordfighter or a magical cat? Here are a few of my favorite systems that step outside the traditional framework of a dungeon and/or a dragon.

In for a Pound...

Tuesday, March 30th, 2021

The other day I was musing on why we use "lb" when we refer to weight in pounds. As it turns out, lb is an abbreviation of the Latin word libra (balance or scales) and also the initials for libra pondo (a pound by weight). In English we kept pondo (pound) and use lb for the unit itself. This is also where the symbol for British pounds (₤) comes from, and Italy’s pre-Euro currency the lira is also a shortened form of libra. I had no idea!

Not-So-Cuddly Kids' Book Creatures

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2021

Picture books are filled with animal characters who happily swim, fly, slither, clip-clop, and stroll through their pages.  While plenty are genuinely cute and cuddly creatures like mice, rabbits, cats, and dogs, some, as Anthony points out, are a little more intimidating in the real world.

A Pair of Para's

Tuesday, January 19th, 2021

Conversations at the bookstore get a bit...esoteric sometimes.  Like when a discussion about skydiving led Anthony down an etymological rabbit hole regarding the origins of the prefix "para."

Bowie Books

Thursday, January 13th, 2021

Last week was the anniversary of not only David Bowie’s birthday (January 8th) but also the anniversary of his death (January 10th). He would have been 74 years old.  Bookseller Anthony shares some of his favorite literary works inspired by the Thin White Duke.

Page-to-Screen Adaptations: Halloween Edition

Thursday, October 29th, 2020

Adaptations are popular in every film genre, and it's particularly true of horror.  Some are able to faithfully recreate the terror of the original source material, while others...let's just say they take a different approach.  Anthony highlights some of his favorite (and not-so-favorite) horror adaptations, just in time for Halloween.

Since we can't have dozens of customers in store as we usually would this time of year, we've come up with other ways to keep our booksellers' recommending skills sharp.  The latest challenge?  The 90 second book list.  Here's how it works.  Each bookseller gets a topic and 90 seconds to find as many books as fit that topic as possible.
