Big Topics for the Little Ones

Mental health for kids

There are lots of big and scary things happening in the world right now.  The school shooting in Uvalde, the invasion of Ukraine, systemic violence against people of color, the ongoing toll of the pandemic: these are hard things to deal with as an adult, let alone explain to a child.

Today, we're sharing some resources for discussing those big topics with kids.

Explore our article below to find expert articles on child psychology and age-appropriate books that will help open conversations about mental health — and give children space to explore, express, and work through those big, scary feelings.

Ramadan books

Beginning with the first appearance of the crescent moon in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection for Muslim people around the world.  This is a time of reconnection and dedication for the followers of Islam—and it can be a difficult time for those fasting, so make sure to be extra considerate of your Muslim friends!

In recognition of Ramadan, we're highlighting some wonderful children's books that share Muslim stories.  From titles about Ramadan, to magical adventures, to the everyday lives of Muslim children, these books are sure to delight young readers.

Kids' Books for Presidents Day!

Monday, February 21, 2022.

American flag with blue skyPresidents Day?  Presidents' Day?  President's Day?  The holiday's name varies by state, but the federal holiday is officially called George Washington's Birthday—although the holiday doesn't always land on Washington's actual birthday, thanks to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.

But even thought the official holiday is only named for George Washington, we're taking an expansive interpretation of the holiday, and sharing kids' books about all kinds of US presidents—and the government in general.
