Book cover: Before the Ever After

The Coretta Scott King Book Awards recognize African-American authors and illustrators of outstanding books for children and young adults.  There are seperate awards for authors and illustrators, as well as the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Author Award and the Coretta Scott King/Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement.  They are awarded annually by the American Library Association as part of the Youth Media Awards.

On Power and Protest

My family has been diving deep this week into discussions of the first amendment and what a healthy protest looks like. There has been a lot to unpack for all of us, and these aren't straightforward conversations, especially for young people.  That makes them all the more important, however.  There is so much responsibility in being a good citizen.  We need to understand our rights and how our actions affect those around us.

Back to School

One of the many fun jobs we get as booksellers is seasonally changing displays, pulling out old favorites and bringing in new additions with the changing of season, holidays and special events.  Normally with the approach of summer's end, we start gathering our return to school and fall favorites, books for calming nervous jitters and to welcome the changing seasons.

Shark Week

Did you know that the Discovery Channel's Shark Week is the longest running annual event on cable television?  The celebration of one of nature's most feared and misunderstood creatures has been a feature since 1988!  In honor of this year's event, we couldn't resist sharing a few of our favorite literary sharks.
