Over the past year, you've gotten to know our booksellers a bit better as we shared our favorite books, recent reads, recommendations, and, of course, photos of our work-from-home spaces and furry coworkers. But while we're quick to share our bookish interests, we seldom take the time to share about our other hobbies, interests, and areas of expertise, and with such a quirky group of people, you'd better believe those non-bookish pursuits are both varied and intriguing! So we thought we'd ask each staff member to share a new kind of story, one about their life beyond books. First up is Peter, store owner and lifelong fan of Chelsea Football Club.
In our first installment, Narratives of World War II, we focused on non-fiction accounts of the Holocaust, the horrors of battle, and feats of daring and courage. This week, we've expanded our timeframe look at fiction spawned of the experience of war. Eyewitness accounts rendered fictional bring alive a horror that did not need to be invented, from authors who endured it themselves.
The extraordinary sacrifice and brutal horror of the second World War has spawned countless novels essays and stories. These books on war are not driven by a voyeuristic curiosity of conflict, but by a desire to understand who we are and what we, or what some of us, are capable of, both in terms of acts of heroism and selflessness and unthinkable cruelty.
We have a responsibility as citizens to understand the reality and human cost of conflict. These books will help shed light.
