Pride Month may be over, but there's still so much to explore when it comes to LGBTQ+ stories and authors.  For example, romance is one of the most popular genres for LGBTQ+ stories, but it's hardly the only one!  Here are some books that explore representation beyond just the realm of romance.

2021 Lambda Literary Awards

Lambda Literary Awards celebrates works that explore LGBT themes. Categories include Humor, Romance and Biography. The Lambda Literary Foundation states that its mission is "to celebrate LGBT literature and provide resources for writers, readers, booksellers, publishers, and librarians—the whole literary community." The awards were instituted in 1988.

Underated YA Books to Read This Pride Month

Recommending books to teenagers during Pride month is always my favorite. As someone who reads and loves queer literature year-round, I love that there's an entire month every year where people are extra excited to get their hands on books about the LGBTQ+ community. We've all heard of Simon Vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda and The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue, and while these are great books to start with, this year I wanted to share some of my favorite lesser known books to read this June.

It's Pride Month

As many of you likely already know, June is Pride Month. What you might not know, though, is that the very first "pride" was actually a riot to protest police violence against the gay community. A black trans woman threw a brick and history was made. A lot has changed since then. Same-sex marriage is the law of the land. The military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy was instituted and repealed. AIDS, a disease that ravaged the gay community and nearly wiped out an entire generation is now a manageable condition.

Celebrating Pride

My Twitter feed was all a-buzz with an image of a young man on the subway removing his pride stickers and hiding his rainbow flag as he went home from a Pride Rally.  As he got closer to his suburban home and further from the safety of the city, he knew that what he wore proudly a few hours ago could get him harassed, or worse, back home.

I tweeted that if we all wore pride buttons and stickers the harassers couldn’t attack every one of us.  So that’s what we have done.
