The Great Solar Eclipse of 2024!

Photo of a total solar eclipseDid you know that 99% of people who live in the US will be able to see a partial or total solar eclipse on April 8th, 2024?  According to NASA, every contiguous U.S. state, plus parts of Alaska and Hawaii, will experience at least a partial solar eclipse.  Because of this, we're going to be closed on April 8th so booksellers who want to travel to see the total eclipse can do so, as it might be a once in a lifetime opportunity!

While solar eclipses aren't exactly rare (a total eclipse happens somewhere on Earth every 18 months or so), any given location will only experience an eclipse once every 400 years, on average.  This particular eclipse is special because the path of totality (i.e. the area that will see a total eclipse) is wider than usual due to the moon's current distance from the Earth and that path will pass over more highly populated areas than the most recent total eclipse seen in the continental US (in 2017).

Eclipses have been a source of wonder, awe, inspiration, and curiosity for millennia.  We've assembled a small collection of books helping young readers understand this unique phenomenon, but—just this once—we're recommending putting the book down and experiencing this in person.  Just make sure you watch the eclipse safely!  Check out these recommendations and guidelines from NASA.
