Happy Birthday, Beverly Cleary!

Beloved children's author Beverly Cleary is celebrating her 102nd birthday today!
Best known for her Henry Huggins series and Ramona Quimby series, Cleary has published dozens of books and has won the Newbery Medal, the National Book Award, and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award. As a young child, she developed a love of books from her mother, who was a volunteer librarian, but Cleary initially struggled with reading. Her persistence in learning paid off, however, and by third grade she'd caught up with her classmates and was looking for new stories to read.
To her dismay, she found that the sorts of books she most wanted to read, funny stories about young children like her, were largely absent from the books available at the time. This was a problem she resolved to correct as an adult. "If you don't see the book you want on the shelves, write it," Cleary, said. With her stories about Ramona, Henry, and other adventurous youngsters, Cleary did just that.
