Justin is one of our newest booksellers, but don't be fooled! He already knows his way around the bookstore like a he's been here for years...although it probably doesn't hurt that he spent a fair bit of time here as a book lover before taking up his post as a bookseller. You can find him making recommendations around the store (ask him about his favorites in literature, classics, or horror!) and you might even catch him at our curbside pickup desk from time to time.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I am from Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan. I moved to Traverse City in July of 2020 after graduating with a degree in English Literature from Lake Superior State University. Of course, I love reading, like most booksellers do, but I also like to write when I’m inspired to (which I wish was more often). When I’m not working, I enjoy exploring new places with my fiancée.
What are the five books you’ll never part with?
How about six!
It by Stephen King
American Gods by Neil Gaiman
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
Boy’s Life by Robert McCammon
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
What's one book you wish you had read sooner (or later)?
I wish I would’ve read The Catcher in the Rye sooner because it’s the book that pushed me into the world of literature.
What’s your favorite thing about being a bookseller?
I’ll list a few!
Seeing how the books flow throughout the store. Seeing what books people are buying or the books that have numerous people excited. Then obviously the bookseller perks, like the staff discount and free books from the publishers!
You’re browsing a bookstore. What’s the first section you gravitate toward?
Either the bestsellers or staff picks and then on to the horror section.
If someone asked for a book recommendation, but you can only ask one question to see what they like, what would you ask?
I’d have to ask them what was the last book that you really loved.
