Sam Duby is one of our full-time booksellers, specializing in children's literature. Sam joined us in 2018, and has the distinction of having worked at more independent bookstores than nearly anyone else on staff! Since kids' books are her specialty, Sam's our go-to person for book fairs, so if you ever want to host a fair for your school or library, she'll be on hand to recommend all the best books for readers of all ages.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I've spent most of my life surrounded by books. I was the shy kid that would rather hide behind a book than anything else. That hasn't changed much. I've had the privilege of working in several independent bookstores throughout the years but nothing beats Northern Michigan.
What's one thing you wish more people knew about being a bookseller?
Although we would love to, we don't sit around and read all day.
When you visit a bookstore, what's the first section you gravitate toward?
Staff picks. Then the children's section.
What is your favorite thing about being a bookseller?
I really enjoy school book fairs.I get to spend the day surrounded by kids that are so excited to talk about books. It's magical.
If you could host a dinner party for five people, living or dead, real or fictional, whom would you invite?
I would be a horrible host but I'd love for these people to come over and cook for friends and family. They can do all the work, right?
