Myths for Kids

When my son Henry was five, we picked up a copy of D'Ullaires Book of Greek Myths, and he was hooked! Obsessed! He was particularly fond of Hermes, and spent the better part of that year sporting a stocking cap with some glued on wings that we threw together. At his very awesome school (which we miss much at the moment!) they have an end of year talent show that the kindergarteners through third graders participate in. Henry decided he was going to tell a greek myth story, and stood in front of the entire school and told the story of Hermes! It was amazing!

What I really took away from that, besides being a proud mom, was the way that myths build storytellers. These stories have been shared for ages, and know no boundaries, every culture having their own but with a running similarity that binds them together, the human need for understanding and storytelling.

Recently, there have been adaptations of mythologies and folk tales from around the world in children's literature. With this first section, I've put together a collection of lovely illustrated books for the youngest readers, with focus on classic collections.

"Imagine a vault so cavernous that it could contain all the world's greatest treasures and relics, from mummified remains of ancient monarchs to glistening swords brandished by legendary warriors. Who could be in charge of such a vault and how did he come into possession of such a unique collection? Who is...Professor Brownstone?"

A retelling of The Binding of Fenrir, the young hero Arthur, son of explorer Mr Brownstone, rescues his Icelandic Village in this one. I love the illustrations, also perfect for picture book readers that need more story in their read aloud.
