Nothing to See Here
It's been quiet here at Brilliant Books this week. Too quiet.
With biting cold and snowy roads, we expect to have fewer visitors in-store. But on days when the doorbell seldom rings, it's usually more than made up for by the phone, or the alert pings of email and social media notifications rolling in. This week, the quiet was resounding.
Of course, we haven't been left completely on our own. We've had wonderful chats with folks braving the weather, or giving us a call on their lunch hour. We even got to host a private event that was as much fun for us as for the guests! But weeks like this are nerve-wrecking, especially with the announcement of Horizon Books' closure still so fresh in our minds.
People out there are relying on us. Every day, we're shipping out books and other goodies ordered from all over the country. We're recommending books to those sturdy Northern Michigan souls who share their philosophy on weather with the US Post Office (Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night...). We're hand-picking books for Brilliant Books Monthly subscribers, coordinating book fairs, planning author events, scheduling book club meetings, and putting together fundraiser packs for local charities.
But you may not realize that we rely on you even more. And, as the unfortunate news of Horizon has shown, it doesn't matter how big or venerable the bookstore may be. All it takes is for those quiet weeks to add up, and before you know it, there's no one left to coordinate those book club meetings and author events, or recommend something new for your reluctant young reader.
So if we haven't heard from you in a while, now's the time. Give us a call or send us an email. Ask us for a recommendation on Twitter, or recommend us to your friends! And most importantly, if you love what we do, make sure you support us so we can keep doing what you love—and what we love. Even when things get quiet.
