We're Going to Miss You, Jodie!
At the end of last week we got some very bittersweet news. Jodie, one of our senior booksellers, has been offered his dream job working for a game developer, and was asked to start immediately. While we're going to miss him tremendously, and are sad not to be able to throw him a going-away party Bilbo Baggins would be jealous of, we know this was an opportunity he couldn't pass up!
Jodie has been with us since our Suttons Bay days, and is possibly the only bookseller we know of with his own fan club. No joke, we've had people tell us they traveled across the state just to visit the store and get recommendations from him. He was twice the recipient of a James Patterson Bookseller Christmas Bonus, meaning he was nominated by booklovers and then hand-picked by Patterson himself to be a recipient! Jodie pioneered our ever-expanding role playing and board games section and curated our collection of science fiction and fantasy, plus comics, graphic novels, and classic "nerd" favorites like Star Wars. He was always ready to chat new or classic Sci-Fi, delve deep into the world of Tolkien, or recommend some lighter magical realism.
Jodie was the host of many an epic game night here at Brilliant Books. He teamed up with our neighbors at Tabletop Underground to host games there as well, and in his spare time, writes supplement material for a variety of games and runs his own Youtube channel, Quest Wise, which reveiws and discusses games and more. So clearly, his shift into a role in game development makes perfect sense, and they're unbelievably lucky to have him, even though we're sad he won't be with us anymore.
We've got some big shoes to fill (literally) but we're going to do our best. We've got some up and coming booksellers who are excited for the challenge and ready to build on the foundation Jodie created for us.
So, Jodie, from all of us here at Brilliant Books, and all your fans beyond, we wish you all the very best. We'll miss you.
And because Jodie can't ever end a conversation without at least one book recommendation, he's got one last set of staff favorites for us all. Happy reading!
A re-imagining of the classic Moby Dick tale, but with dragons! German author Bernd Perplies brings us all the gut wrenching fear of dragons in his take on Herman Melville's epic yarn of revenge. Having tackled Moby Dick a few years ago I was excited to give this book a go, and I was not disappointed. Told in a high fantasy style, Black Leviathan is great for fans of all things draconic!
A beautiful history-based fantasy novel from the author of Alif the Unseen and the Ms. Marvel comic book series. With fable-like prose and sweeping descriptions of Alhambra palaces and landscapes, we are introduced to a world where the price of magic is death, and betrayal lies around every corner.
For fans and scholars of pure, unadulterated, folk tales drawn directly from the mouths of those who truly believe. The Secret Commonwealth, written in the late seventeenth century, but not published until 1815, is a collection of tales focusing on Elves, Fairies, and other assorted Fae creatures, brought together by Episcopalian minister Robert Kirk. A raw look into the beliefs and mythologies of the British Isles.
