The Young Adult Starter Pack for Ambitious Young Readers

So, it's finally happened.

Your ambitious young reader has finally made their way through all of the middle grade series they've loved over the last few years and you've decided that they're finally ready to try out some young adult titles. But where do you start? How do you make sure the books you're selecting are age-appropriate and engaging? Ultimately, it comes down to what you're comfortable with your child reading, and while these books generally fall on the tamer end of the young adult spectrum, I always suggest that you read reviews from websites you trust, or even read the book first yourself if you're concerned about mature content.

Regardless, here are some of my favorite young adult books that are suitable for younger readers broken up into eight different entry points.

For the Harry Potter Readers

These books are perfect for a kid who likes a little bit of magic in their stories and isn't afraid of a little minor peril, as long as the good guys win in the end.

For Those Who Have Already Loved The Hunger Games

For many people, Suzanne Collins's bestselling series is their first foray into the young adult world. So, if you're alright with some violence and are in the need of more gripping dystopian series, check out these titles.

For the Aspiring Tech Mogul

Whether they have an interest in coding, or just really like video games, these quick-paced science fiction tales are sure to please.

(Don't let Illuminae's length scare you! It's a multi-media story told in a case file form. There are pages with single sentences on them!)

For Someone Looking for a Little Bit of Romance

Some kids like to steer clear of romance, which is totally fine! But for the few that have watched To All the Boys I've Loved Before a few too many times, here's a couple other sweet romance stories they might love.

For the Future Historians

Have a young reader with a fierce passion for the past? Try these historical fiction tales!

For the Amatuer Sleuths

Who doesn't love a good murder mystery? These selections may get a bit bloody, but they're fast paced and will keep them captivated until the very last page.

For Those Who Want to Change the World

Arguably the most mature category on this list, these books deal with real world issues in a palatable way, perfect for starting conversations and keeping the interest of anyone with a passion for social justice.

For the Graphic Novel Fiends

Graphic novels have been all the rage over the last few years for young readers. But, who said it has to end as they get older? If your young reader is a fan of visual stories, try these!
